Marrakech sits at a crossroads. Within a few hours you can reach the Atlantic coast, 110-meter waterfalls, the High Atlas mountains, or a stone desert made for sunset dinners. Here is how to get to each of them, what it costs, and the practical details that actually matter.
Essaouira
About 175 km west, roughly 2.5 hours by car. Plan a full day — 10 to 12 hours door to door — and leave between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning.
The practical choice: CTM or Supratours bus (100–140 MAD per person). Both leave from their own stations in Gueliz, and the price is the same whether you book online or at the counter. Book online anyway: morning buses to Essaouira regularly sell out.
Two details worth knowing:
- Supratours stops right outside the medina walls in Essaouira; the CTM station is further out, so you will need a 30–50 MAD petit taxi to reach the old town. If you are coming straight from the train station, Supratours departs from right next to it — convenient, since the train does not go to Essaouira.
- Large bags do not go in the cabin. Check them at the counter 30 minutes before departure for a 5–10 MAD fee per bag, and keep the receipt tag — you need it to collect your bag on arrival.
Cheaper alternative: shared grand taxi (100–150 MAD per seat) from Al Azzouzia bus station. Slower and less comfortable, but it works.
Private option: hiring a whole grand taxi costs 1,200–1,800 MAD for the vehicle, hotel pickup included.
Organized tours go for around 160 MAD per person on international booking sites — hotel pickup, transport only. Booked locally around Jemaa el-Fna, prices are less predictable and you will need to haggle.
Note on seasons: Essaouira is famously windy in summer, which is a relief after Marrakech’s heat — but pack a wind-resistant layer regardless. The road is flat and fine year-round.
Ouzoud Falls
157 km northeast, 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Leave around 8:00–8:30 in the morning; you will want 4–5 hours on site for the trails and lunch.
The practical choice: organized tour (190–360 MAD per person) with hotel pickup. Online prices are usually fixed and competitive — but know what you are buying: it is transport only. Lunch, the boat ride, and any guide are extras.
Shared grand taxi (75–115 MAD per seat) from Al Azzouzia is the cheapest real option.
Skip public buses for this one. There is no direct bus to Ouzoud. You would have to take a local bus to Azilal (~50 MAD), then negotiate a grand taxi from there — over 4 hours one way, which kills the day trip.
On site:
- The falls are at their fullest from February to May (snowmelt), though winter rain can turn the water muddy brown.
- Swimming at the base is best July–September.
- Local guides (30–150 MAD per group) will find you in the parking lot. The main trail is paved, marked, and takes under 10 minutes — a guide is optional.
- The small boats that row behind the falls cost about 20 MAD per person and are never included in tour prices.
Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley
The closest option. Tnine Ourika is ~65 km (about 1h15), Imlil — the Toubkal gateway — about 75–80 km (1h30). A 7–8 hour day is plenty; leave between 8:00 and 9:00.
Cheapest: ALSA bus L25 to Tnine Ourika — 7 MAD. It leaves every 15–25 minutes from Sidi Mimoun/Bab Rob from early morning. One catch: it stops at Tnine Ourika, not at the waterfalls. From there you will need a local taxi up to Setti Fatma, where the trails start.
Shared grand taxi to Imlil (40–70 MAD per seat) from Sidi Mimoun/Bab Rob, or take one to Asni (20–30 MAD) and a local minibus on to Imlil (10–15 MAD).
Organized Ourika tours run 230–250 MAD per person with hotel pickup.
Important warning about the return: shared grand taxis leave when full. In winter, when domestic tourism drops, you may struggle to fill a taxi back to Marrakech after 4 PM — drivers may ask you to pay for all 6 seats. Plan your return accordingly.
Also know: the Ourika Valley is prone to flash floods from sudden thunderstorms, in any season. And while the road to Imlil is paved, tracks beyond the village (toward Aremd or the Toubkal basecamps) need a 4×4 and possibly chains in deep winter.
Agafay Desert
The easiest trip: only ~30 km, 30–40 minutes away. Most people go in the late afternoon — leave around 3:30–4:00 PM so quad biking or a camel ride lines up with sunset, when it is cooler. Allow 4–6 hours.
Best value: an organized package (400–900 MAD per person) combining transport, a quad bike ride, a sunset camel trek, and a dinner show. Bought separately, a private round-trip transfer alone is 500–800 MAD — the package wins.
Private transfer (500–800 MAD round trip) with a driver who waits at the camp for your return. Do not cheap out on the return: ride-hailing apps like InDrive will get you there (350–600 MAD one way) but finding a driver back at night, with poor signal in the desert, is genuinely risky.
Do not drive a regular rental car there. The last 6 km are rutted, unpaved tracks, and standard rental contracts explicitly void insurance on unpaved roads. If you are renting, it has to be a 4×4.
Summer middays are brutal — trips run late afternoon/evening for a reason. Winter nights drop near freezing, so bring something warm for dinner shows.
A few booking rules that apply everywhere
- Book intercity buses online. Prices are the same at the counter, but morning departures sell out and you will be turned away.
- Book grand taxis online when you can. A fixed pre-booked transfer (around 1,050–1,800 MAD for a private vehicle to Ouzoud, for example) avoids the street-haggling lottery at the stations.
- Tour prices online vs. local: online rates are standardized and usually cheaper for transport-only tours; local agencies around Jemaa el-Fna vary and require haggling — and rarely include lunch, guides, or activities.
- Airport transfers use fixed zones (100–150 MAD) depending on where you are staying — the meter does not apply. Standard taxis within the city start at 7 MAD and run 2 MAD/km by day, 4.2 MAD/km at night.
Good to know before you go
- The old Bab Doukkala bus station is closed — long-distance buses and grand taxis now depart from Al Azzouzia in the Menara district, further from the medina. Add 30–50 MAD for the petit taxi ride there, or take ALSA buses 15/16. (CTM and Supratours are exempt and still depart from their own central stations in Gueliz.)
- Fuel costs about 15.3 MAD/liter for diesel, ~15.15 for gasoline — if you are renting a car, factor roughly 275 MAD in fuel for a 300 km round trip in an economy diesel.
Prices were last checked in October 2026 and shift with the season — treat them as a working range, not a promise.
